The Wimbledon Park Golf Club
1898 - 1998

Opened in 1898 and shaped like a giant horseshoe, the Golf Club land sweeps in a southerly direction down the east side of the lake, curves around the southern end and then traverses the west side of the lake. One couldn't think of a more lovely setting for such a club, which is particularly enhanced by the many great oaks which are dotted about the course. Many of these venerable trees were planted by Capability Brown and they still thrive. Walking the course presents you with the original views laid out in the 1760s. It is because the golf course and Capability Brown’s ideas for Wimbledon Park work so well together, that the WPHG supports the continued use of the land as a golf course. The Club offers a full eighteen hole course, along with a practice putting green and a very handsome Clubhouse with bar and restaurant. To sit on the Clubhouse terrace with a cool drink and watch the sun set across the lake is a pleasure hard to beat anywhere in London.
Such were my comments when I wrote the above in 2015. Following the club membership being offered £86,000 each for voting to abandon their leasehold for the land, and their acceptance of the All England's offer, we are now faced with the potential demise of the Golf Club and significant changes to the course landscape.  It is unclear as to what the All England have in mind for the land, but it appears that in 2021 the course will be reduced to 9 holes and from 2022 the Golf Club may have to look for a new site entirely. At least this website shall bear testament as to how lovely this parkland is today and serve as a record for the future.
